The Midwestern Governors Association held its sixth annual invite-only transmission meeting in Columbus, Ohio on October 5-6, 2016.

The sixth annual transmission conference provided an opportunity to learn how recent technology advancements can help utilities and state and federal regulators meet future energy goals and examine the regulatory challenges.

We started the meeting off on Wednesday morning at AEP’s Ray King Transmission Training Center just outside Columbus to see AEP’s new BOLD Transmission Tower Design. We will also have a discussion there about the “Next Generation Energy Company.”

Technology is changing fast for electric utilities, regulators and energy policy staff. We have seen great advancements in cost effectiveness and the improved capability of:

  • Wind power,
  • Solar power,
  • Energy storage,
  • Distributed generation,
  • Unmanned drones, and
  • Grid modernization.
