2015 - Kansas Governor Sam Brownback's Agenda

Kansas Governor Sam Brownback was the 2015 Chair of the MGA and his agenda focused on Reducing Poverty and Expanding Opportunity in the Midwest.

Governor Brownback’s agenda focused on increasing regional discussions on poverty reduction. Despite the globally recognized regional attributes of the Midwest, there are some in the region that are living in poverty. States continue to lead on policies, programs and assistance for those in need. However, the complexity of this issue does not allow for a one-size-fits-all solution. Fortunately, there are a lot of regional similarities and opportunities for sharing best practices and discussing how to approach poverty reduction.

MGA activities for Governor Brownback's agenda included:

  • MGA Poverty Summit

Governor Brownback will be hosting a regional poverty summit on September 22-23 in Kansas City. Click here for more information.

  • Regional Working Group to Address Poverty Reduction

This working group will consisted of Midwesterners from a wide-spectrum including governors’ and state agency staff, academia, community groups and other leaders in their states.

  • Topic-based Conference Calls

The MGA organized a series of conference calls with members of the working group. These calls will occur on a monthly basis and focused on different topic areas related to poverty reduction including: rural housing, workforce preparedness, rural connectivity barriers, state approaches to men/family resources, andexamining the metrics states use to track those in poverty.
